Business telephone systems have seen significant advances in technology that offer many new calling features, lower up-front costs and reduced maintenance and support.

Our team at Northstar Network Group will help you assess your current phone systems, identify how your business can benefit from VoIP phone system technologies, and then determine which business phone solution will best fit your company’s needs.

What is VoIP and How does it Work?

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a revolutionary technology that allows you to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (analog) phone line.

VoIP services convert your voice into a digital signal that can be transmitted over the Internet. However, if you are calling a regular phone number, the signal is then converted to a regular telephone signal before it reaches the destination.

VoIP is basically a clever "reinvention of the wheel”, currently becoming the global standard of voice and data technologies and will one day replace the traditional phone system entirely.

What Equipment do you need?

Phone System – This is the control center for your VoIP solution.  In a typical situation a telephone line is connected to the phone company's local Central Office through "a trunk”.  The Central Office is responsible for routing incoming and outgoing calls.  It also provides other services like voice mail, call forwarding, caller ID and so on. For this service the phone company receives a monthly fee.

A company that requires dozens or even hundreds of phones would quickly suffer from a very large phone bill!

Our phone systems essentially take the place of the phone company's Central Office within the company by acting as the exchange point, routing calls.

IP Phones -- These specialized phones look just like normal phones with a handset, cradle and buttons. But instead of having the standard RJ-11 phone connectors, IP phones have an RJ-45 Ethernet connector.   Each IP desk phone has two Ethernet ports, one for the network connection and a second port that can be used to connect a desktop computer, printer or switch. This allows the desk phone and desktop computer to share one Ethernet cable back to the Ethernet switch. Since the phones are plugged into the LAN, it is easy to move phones from room to room without having to reprogram the system
